TYVEK - "Blunt Instrumental" LP (Night People)

Modern day Detroit, broken down Urinals, free to be a bit sloppy, free to fool around. “Blunt Instrumental” is only 2/5’s instrumental, and a much enjoyed
new offering from art-damaged garage unit TYVEK. “Bicycle Fantasy I” and “9 Bucks” are perfect without any words cluttering what’s there to catch: the first being the perfect end to the A-side of a jankey LP that would be a favorite from the In The Red catalog, the latter being the one that would appropriately start the live set at the release show.

“ Robots, Dogs” and “YOU, YOU, YOU” are summed up by the line “EVERYTHING IS SLIGHTLY OUT OF REACH”, but that’s the approach that works so well with these guys, and why I loved their first few singles so much. Addictive but off-kilter, yet quite “blunt” indeed, the delivery feels insanely confident.

The real “hit single” here though, is “Cold Sun Blind My Eye”, a ten minute ultra lo-fi free jam, that somehow bridges the gap between the free-form psych explorations of something off Not Not Fun or Time-Lag, and the broken-tape deck / gritty garage of the Terminal Boredom sort, a repetitive, appropriately “boring” and ultimately perfect piece of true modern rock. (And the packaging (by Shawn Reed (Wet Hair / Raccoo-oo-oon)) is excellent).
